Mary was born March 8, 1934, in Dexter, Iowa, to Dennis and Mildred (Hammond) McEvoy. She grew up in Stuart and graduated from Stuart High School with the class of 1952. Following graduation, Mary was employed by the telephone company in Stuart until enrolling into Northwestern Institute of Technology in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to become a Lab Technician.
After graduating, she accepted a Lab Technician position in Manning, Iowa. Here she met her husband, Lyle. Mary and Lyle were united in marriage on January 7, 1956, in Stuart, Iowa, at the All Saints Catholic Church. Together they farmed in Manning before purchasing a farm south of Stuart where they made their home in 1960. Mary worked in Dexter as a Lab Technician until Denise was about four years old. Later she was employed at the Guthrie County Hospital for a short time after her children were grown. She also helped her husband Lyle on the farm when needed.
Mary was a member of the Stuart All Saints Catholic Church and the local Bridge Club. She enjoyed boating with her family in the early years. She enjoyed getting together with family and friends for a good laugh over a cup of coffee, or in later years over a good cup of tea. Mary especially loved meeting with family and friends at the West Des Moines Cheesecake Factory for a cheeseburger, glass of wine, and above all, laughter. Many evenings Mary and Debbie Johnston enjoyed a glass of wine and "fun-fun" after work. She had a passion for beautiful colors - which she enjoyed through her love of flowers, painting, and fashion. Mary loved her community and was intensely interested in all things and all people throughout her life. Her presence will be greatly missed by her many dear friends and relatives.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Dennis and Mildred McEvoy, her husband Lyle, her brothers, James and Dennis "Joe" Jr. McEvoy, and her son Patrick Holston.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Denise Stoberl (David L. Brown) of Urbandale, Iowa and Lisa (Fred) Brown of Des Moines, Iowa; grandson, Tim (Rosiee) Brown of Des Moines, Iowa, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
