Mary, daughter of Henry and Mary (Mohr) Hagedorn, was born September 23, 1901, near Manning. She graduated from the Manning High School in 1921. Except for five years in Des Moines, Mary has made her home in this community for her entire life.
She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, the United Presbyterian Women, also the American Legion Auxiliary and the Women's Relief Corps.
She had been in failing health for two years and entered the Manning Plaza Nursing Home about a year ago where she died on May 11, 1983, at the age of 81 years, 7 months and 18 days.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Truman Kempen, Herman Koester, and Joe Steen; by her parents; by the following brothers: Gus, Otto, Bill, Henry, Charles, Louie, and Herman; by two sisters, Dora Petersen and Rose Prickett.
She is survived by her daughter, Helyn Hathcock, Chamblee, Georgia; two grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a brother, John Hagedorn, Des Moines; two sisters-in-law, Emma Hagedorn and Margaret Schroeder; also by nieces, nephews, cousins and many other good friends in this community.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 14, 1983, at 2:00 p.m. at the Ohde Funeral Home in Manning and was officiated by Reverend Dennis Johnson of the Presbyterian Church in Manning. Organist was Dorothy Kusel. Interment was at the Manning Cemetery, and casket-bearers were Joe Knueven, Harold Hodne, John Harold Hodne, John Hagedorn, Lester Hagedorn, Maynard Ohl and Ray Pratt. The Ohde Funeral Home in Manning was in charge of arrangements.
