Mary Ellen, daughter of Robert and Celeste (Engelman) Davis, was born March 15, 1901, near Lewiston, Montana. When Mary was five years old she moved with her family to Walnut, Iowa, where she attended schools.

On December 6, 1919, Mary was united in marriage with George Otto Gaulke at Atlantic, Iowa. They made their home in Atlantic and three girls were born to this union. George died in 1955. Several years later, she moved to Watervliet, Michigan, to be near her daughter, Helen Sprague, and to work in Whitey Sprague's grocery store.

Mary continued to live there until 1977, when she moved to Manning, Iowa, to be near her daughter, Lorraine Kruse. Mary was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Due to failing health, Mary became a resident of Manning Plaza Nursing Home, Manning, Iowa, on January 13, 1992. She died there on Friday, September 24, 1999, at the age of 98 years, 6 months, and 9 days.

She is preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; two daughters, Helen Sprague and Lorraine Knop-Kruse; one grandson Alan Knop; two brothers: Robert Davis and John Davis; and three sisters: Edna Lewis, Vera Moreland; and Margaret Davis.
