LAWRENCE - Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Catholic Church here for Mrs. Mary D. Schurer, 71, Lawrence, Kansas, who died Saturday, June 2, at her home.
She was a newspaper Linotype operator from 1959 until she retired in 1976, and worked for several different newspapers, including the Chicago Tribune and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. She was employed by the Topeka Daily Capital from 1967 to 1968.
Mrs. Schurer was born June 11, 1912, at Billings, Montana, the daughter of John and Anna (Hagge) Gregory. She had lived at Lawrence since 1976.

She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and the altar society at the church, the War Mothers, and a charter member of Daughters of Isabella, all at Lawrence. She was also a member of the International Typographical Union.

She was preceded in death by two infant children.

Survivors include two sons, Mick Schurer, Lawrence, and Greg Schurer, Wood River; Nebraska; two sisters, Mrs. Helen Carlson, Chicago, Illinois, and Mrs. Betty Cannon, Seattle, Washington; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery at Lawrence, Kansas. A parish rosary will be recited at 7p.m. Tuesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary, Lawrence, followed by a Daughters of Isabella rosary at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Lawrence Visiting Nurses, Lawrence Hospice or St. John's Catholic Church, Lawrence, in care of the mortuary. Mrs. Schurer will lie in state at the mortuary from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Services for Mary D. Schurer, 71, 1417 W. Fourth, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. John's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Al Rockers in charge. Burial will be in Lawrence's Mount Calvary Cemetery, Lawrence, Kansas.
She died Saturday at her home.
Mrs. Schurer was born June 11, 1912, in Billings, Montana. She had been a linotype operator from 1959-1976, working at the Chicago Tribune, Manilla, Iowa, Medicine Lodge, Kansas, Craig, Colorado, the Topeka Capital, Allen Press in Lawrence from 1961 to 1967, and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. When she retired in 1976, she moved back to Lawrence.
She was a member of St. John's Church in Lawrence, the International Typographical Union and St. John's Altar Society. She was a charter member of the Daughters of Isabella and an active member of the War Mothers organization in Lawrence. She was a volunteer worker at the Clearinghouse, the Lawrence Senior Center and the Bus 62 office in Lawrence.

Survivors include two sons, Mick, 1300 Fairlane, and Greg, Wood River, Nebraska; two sisters, Mrs. Helen Carlson, Chicago, and Mrs. Betty Cannon, Seattle, Washington; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. A parish rosary will be read at 7 p.m. Tuesday, followed by a Daughters of Isabella rosary at 7:30 p.m., both at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. The family prefers memorials to the Douglas County Visiting Nurses Association, Hospice of Douglas County or to St. John's Church in the care of the funeral home.

Note: Mary Schurer lived, worked, and raised her two sons, in Manning from 1949 through 1959.
She ran the Manning Cafe on the east side of Main Street where the Manning Plaza stands in 2011.
For about a year when the Schurer family first moved to Manning, Mary and her husband, Clarence "Bud" Schurer ran the Sportsman's club at the Great Western Park.
