MRS. MARY (WITT) ROSS

Mrs. Mary Ross, 78, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Chris Barten of Manning, Saturday, October 16 1937. She had been failing in health since last February and had been bedridden for the past five weeks.

She was born on January 21, 1859, in Province Pommern, Germany, and came to America with her folks at the age of 13 in July 1872, and settled in Jackson County, Iowa. In the year of 1880 she was married to Fred Ross at Maquoketa, Iowa, and they moved to their farm in Lincoln Township, Audubon County. Mr. Ross died October 21, 1907.

Mrs. Ross stayed on the farm with her on August until 1916, when she moved to Manning. For the last 14 years she had lived with the daughter at whose home she died.

Mrs. Ross is survived by six children: Fred and August Ross of Manning; Herman Ross of Mountain Lake, Minnesota; Mrs. Emma Barten and Mrs. Ida Borkowski of Manning and Mrs. Lewis Jurgens of Audubon. Three children, Albert, George, and Marie, died in infancy.

She is also survived by a brother, William Witt of Gray, a sister, Minnie Witt of Manning and 18 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends, Funeral services were held Monday, October 18 at the Manning Lutheran Church, the Rev. Johann M. Ansorge officiating. Pallbearers were six grandsons: Ernest and Clarence Barten, Raymond Ross, and Lloyd Borkowski, Manning; Marvin and LaVerne Jurgens, Audubon.
