Mary Coomes-Onan
City Marshall's Mother Dead
R.J. Coomes' mother passed away at the home of her daughter in Tenant.
Died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Hopkins, at Tenant, Iowa. Mrs. Mary M. Onan at the age of 69 years, 7 months, and 22 days. She was born in Kentucky, November 29th, 1838 and moved to Fulton County, Illinois, in 1844 with an uncle. She lived with him until 1858 when she was married to Robert Coomes, at St. Augustine, Knox County, Illinois. To this union were born two sons, Robert of Manning, and Henry, who died at the age of three years. The husband died in the Civil War. She was again married in 1863 to Hamilton Onan, at Stangutine in 1867. To this union two daughters was born, Mrs. Laura Hopkins, of Tenant, Iowa, and May McCuen of Lanesboro, Iowa. This husband died in 1871 and in 1884 she moved with her three children to Carroll County, where she has since resided.
After a long, busy and useful life, she died as she had lived, honored, trusted and loved. She was a woman of strong Christian character of the Catholic faith. She seemed born to inspire the love and respect of all who were so fortunate as to be acquainted with her. No one was more willing to aid the suffering, cheer the despondent, and to sustain the weak than was this good mother and sickness and death came to her as it comes to us all. Neighbors and friends vied with each other in acts of loving kindness and tender solitude, and many were the willing hands and hearts ready to assist in fighting back the ravages of disease to avert the inevitable. But the great destroyer had placed the signet on her brow and today hundreds who loved her living mourn her as dead.
The funeral was held at the Sacred Heart Church in Manning last Sunday afternoon at two o'clock conducted by Rev. Father Coffee and she was laid to rest in the Catholic Cemetery east of town, followed by a large concourse of sorrowing friends.
