Mary Dorothy, daughter of Henry and Cecelia (Mueller) Kaufman, was born March 23, 1917, near Westphalia, Iowa. She lived with her family on a farm near Earling and attended St. Joseph's School in Earling. After completing her education she 'worked out' in the homes of other families in the area.
On November 5, 1945, Mary was united in marriage with Leroy H. Mundt at St. Joseph's Church in Earling. They moved to California for a short time before returning to Iowa. They first lived in Aspinwall and then settled in Manning. Mary and Leroy were the parents of eight children. Mary was a homemaker and full-time mother to their children.
Mary always raised a large garden and did a lot of canning, as well as, baking, quilting and sewing. In her spare time she enjoyed Bingo and playing cards. Mary was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Manning and was active in the ladies organization. After the death of her husband Leroy on May 9, 1983, Mary remained in their home in Manning. When her health began to fail in late 2005, she became a resident of Manning Plaza Nursing Home. She died there after several weeks of illness on Sunday, March 16, 2008, at the age of 90 years, 11 months and 22 days.
Preceding her in death are her parents; husband; son Barry, in infancy; 4 brothers: Joe Kaufman; Frank Kaufman; Louis Kaufman and Henry Kaufman; 2 sisters Helen Reinig and Jenny Weller.
Mary is survived by 7 children: Linda and husband Lowell Stolfus of New Hampton; Janice and husband Kenneth Mickels of Omaha, NE; Betty Fink and Dan Stewart of Omaha, NE; Beverly and husband Richard Kros of Rochester, MN; Vickie and husband Tom Welch of Omaha, NE; Terry Mundt of Manning and Dean Mundt and wife Kim of Lakeville, MN; 11 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters Peg and husband Mert Schwarte of Harlan and Therese Fromm of Defiance; brother Mike Kaufman and Marlene Church of Omaha, NE; 3 sisters-in-law Vivian Kaufman of Woodbine; Virginia Mundt of Manilla and Esther Jorgensen of New Hampton; brother-in-law Gordon Weller of Westside; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A Christian Mother
God gives us many gifts,
But far above any other,
The first and best He gives us
To the gift of a Christian mother.
Her head bows over the scriptures
Teaching children from God's word.
Her hands are always busy
Doing service for her Lord.
Whenever her children need her
They know she's always there.
Her beauty's in the strength of faith
That she daily finds in prayer.
Her children love and bless her,
And in their lives we see
The lessons of the Savior
That were learned at mother's knee.
