Martin Sailer

Martin Sailer was born September 26, 1913, the son of Raphael and Theresa (Mayer) Sailer. He died at his home in Charter Oak, on Thursday, September 24, 1992, at the age of 78 years. Martin was born on a farm near Gray, Iowa, where he lived with his parents and began his education in a rural school near his home and continued his education at the Sacred Heart School in Templeton, Iowa.

On October 1, 1940, Martin was united in marriage to Sophia Riesselman at St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Halbur, Iowa. The couple settled in the Manning area where they started farming and in 1947 they purchased a farm near Schleswig. They were blessed with seven children. The couple farmed until 1978 when they retired to their new home in Charter Oak.

Martin loved farming and was especially fond of caring for his livestock. Additionally, he enjoyed reading and playing cards and particularly enjoyed the time he spent with his children and grandchildren, illustrating the love and devotion he had for his family. He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Charter Oak, the Knights of Columbus and the Golden Oaks of Charter Oak.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Jane in 1955 and Jacinta in 1954; and two sisters, Katherine Schillinger and Ann Sailer.

Survivors include his wife, Sophia of Charter Oak; four sons: Joel and his wife, Eileen of Denison, Jeff and his wife, Kathi of Omaha, Jon and his wife, Linda of Schleswig and James and his wife, Elise, also of Schleswig; one daughter, Julie Rohe and her husband, Jim of Breda; 21 grandchildren; two brothers, Ralph of Aspinwall and Frank and his wife, Anna of Kiron; and one sister, Teresa Wanninger of Manning.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Charter Oak with Fr. William Wingert serving as Celebrant of the Mass, with interment made in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Charter Oak. Mary Daniel provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Jim Jurgens. Mass servers were Ted Rohe and Robert Sailer. Lectors were Melissa Sailer and Michaela Sailer. Gift bearers were Martina Sailer and Kristi Sailer. Remembrance, Melani Sailer. A parish wake service was held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, at the Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak. Pallbearers were Matt Sailer, Scott Sailer, Tim Rohe, Travis Rohe, Greg Sailer and Ryan Sailer. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Home in Charter Oak.
