Marie Schroeder
Marie Amanda, the tenth child of John C. and Bertha (Wenzel) Schwiesow, was born August 6, 1906, in Iowa Township, Crawford County, Iowa. She attended country school near her home for one year before her parents and sisters: Rose, Milda and Marie moved into Aspinwall in 1913. (Brother Walter had left home to work for area farmers). She then attended the Aspinwall Independent School through the eighth grade.

On March 22, 1928, Marie was united in marriage with Harry Louis Schroeder. Two children were born to this union, Wallace and Carol Ann who was born deaf. Marie served as Postmaster of Aspinwall from 1928 to 1933.

After the death of Marie's father in 1936, Marie and Harry moved into the home of and assisted in the care of her mother who suffered from rheumatoid arthritis and her sister Rose who became a deaf-mute at the age of three after suffering a stroke. Marie helped Rose care for their mother until Bertha's death in 1939 and then cared for Rose until her death in 1960.

During the 1940s, Marie worked at Priebe & Sons in Manning. She then worked as a bookkeeper for Wilmer Ehrichs at Ehrichs' Garage in Aspinwall from 1947 to 1953. She did bookkeeping again in Manning for Priebe's, Hiway Hatchery and Dr. Merlin Kunkel. Marie returned to Aspinwall and worked for Frank Ehrichs at the Ehrichs General Store. In 1965, Marie's son Wallace purchased and operated this grocery store, which also contained the Aspinwall Post Office. Wallace and Marie worked side by side in the store; Wallace as grocer and Marie as Postal Clerk under Postmaster Paul Volmer of Manning, as Aspinwall was a branch of the Manning Post Office at that time. The store was closed in 1985 and the post office was then moved to the Aspinwall Cooperative building. Harry died August 20, 1988.

Marie has been a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Manning since the 1920s. On September 23, 1906, Marie was baptized by Pastor William Engelke and on May 20, 1923, she was confirmed by Pastor Wiegan, both at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. After Pastor J.M. Ansorge started holding services at the schoolhouse in Aspinwall, Marie taught Sunday School for the youngsters of the community. Marie was a long-time secretary-treasurer of the Aspinwall Lutheran Ladies Aid of which she was a charter member.

Marie loved to work in the outdoors, in the garden and visit with customers and friends at the grocery store. She served many hours with the Aspinwall community at the annual celebrations. For many years Marie served as the Aspinwall correspondent for the Manning, Manilla and Denison newspapers.

On Saturday, April 10, 2004, Marie died at Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning, Iowa, after suffering a cracked pelvis in March. She was 97 years, 8 months and 4 days of age.

Besides her parents and husband, Marie is preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters: Louis, Rose, Amanda, Herman, Freddie, Walter, Elsie, John and Milda.

She is survived by her children of Aspinwall: Wallace Schroeder and daughter Carol Ann Schroeder (who attended and graduated from Iowa School for the Deaf in 1960); and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Marie Schroeder is buried in the Manning City Cemetery.
