Death Takes News Writer, Civic Leader
Mrs. Dan R. (Marie W.) McGrath, 75, died unexpectedly of pneumonia at her home in Manning Thursday afternoon, December 29, 1966. A civic leader during the many years she lived in Manning, she also served as area correspondent for several newspapers, including the Carroll Daily Times Herald, for many years.

Eastern Star funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Ohde Funeral Home here. The Rev. Carl G. Sinning, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Judy (Mrs. Lyle) Joens will be vocal soloist and Mrs. Bonita Hagedorn, organist. Burial will be in the Manning Cemetery.

Mrs. McGrath, daughter of Dr. Louis F. and Frances (Von Egert) Moser, was born at Portsmouth March 31, 1891. She came to Manning as a small child. She graduated from Manning High School in 1909, and attended Iowa State Teachers College (now State College of Iowa) at Cedar Falls for a short time. She taught in rural schools, gave piano lessons, and operated an insurance agency in Manning.

She and Mr. McGrath were married June 24, 1912, at Manning. They lived at Letcher, South Dakota, for four years and then returned to Manning, which has continued to be their home. Mrs. McGrath had been in poor health for a number of years and was confined to a wheel chair for the last four years.

Surviving besides her husband are four children: Ralph H. McGrath, Mrs. Ray O. (Helen) Pratt and Mrs. Arved (Mary) Stangl, all of Manning; and Robert N. McGrath, Norwalk, Connecticut; 12 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. C.L. (Melitta) Palmatary of Wilmington, Delaware.

Mrs. McGrath was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Manning; a charter member and past president of Emil Ewoldt Unit of the American Legion Auxiliary; past chairman of the Carroll County American Legion Auxiliary; charter member and past president of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary No. 3517; past matron and a 50-year member of Salona Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.

She organized the Order of Rainbow for Girls in Manning and served as mother advisor of the Rainbow Assembly for many years. She aided in the establishment of the Manning Public Library and acted as librarian for seven years. In the past, she held membership in the Manning Chamber of Commerce, and was a board member of Manning General Hospital.

Preceding her in death were three brothers, Albert, Erwin, and Ralph Moser; and one sister in infancy, and two half-brothers.
