Mrs. Paul K. Paulsen, wife of our fellow townsman, Paul Paulsen, was called from our midst. The whole community was shocked last Saturday noon, July 27, 1918, when the news spread that Mrs. Paulsen had passed away.<
Maria Augusta Gorichs was born in Brakel, Germany, March 29, 1870.
In infancy she was received into the Lutheran Church through holy baptism. In 1883, she was confirmed in the Lutheran faith. In the same year she came to America with her mother and her sister Lisetta.
On the 26th day of February 1888, Miss Gorichs was united in holy wedlock with Paul. K Paulsen, with whom she lived happily for over 30 years.
Nine children were born, to this union, one of which died in infancy.
About six Weeks ago Mrs. Paulsen took sick. Only during the last few days was her illness thought to be serious. All too soon she passed away Saturday, August 27, 1918, aged 48 years, 3 months, and 28 days.
She is mourned by the bereaved husband, Paul K. Paulsen, the children, John of Ames, Paul of Danbury, Mrs. Anna Larson of Irwin, William of Ames, Elsie of Council Bluffs, Alfred, Teddy, and Alice of Irwin; two brothers, August Gorichs of Whittlesey, Wisconsin; Karl Gorichs of Germany, a half-brother, George Kampmann of Meriden, Kansas; and a sister, Mrs. John Fonken of Bryant, South Dakota.
The funeral was held Tuesday, July 30, at the Methodist Church, with Pastor John Ansorge of the Lutheran Church at Manning officiating. The large concourse of friends at the church and cemetery, the numerous beautiful floral pieces, gave proof of the fact that Mrs. Paulsen was well-liked by everyone who knew her.
Those attending the funeral from a distance were John Paulsen and wife from Ames, Paul Paulsen and wife from Danbury, William Paulsen and wife from Ames, Miss Elsie Paulsen from Council Bluffs, August Gorichs, Whittlesey, Wisconsin; Mrs. John Fonken, Bryant, South Dakota; J.J.
