MARIA CATHERINE MISSELHORN

Funeral services for Maria Catherine Misselhorn were held Tuesday, March 19, 1991, at 10:30 a.m. at Ohde Funeral Home in Manning, Iowa. Pastor Robert Riggert of Zion Lutheran Church, Manning, officiated the service with Margaret Backhaus as vocalist and Fern Jensen as organist. Interment was in Manning City Cemetery, Manning, with Keith Misselhorn, Judson Petersen, Elmer Petersen, Kent Misselhorn, Richard Petersen and Leonard Petersen as casket-bearers.

Maria, daughter of Johann Jacob and Catherine (Carlsen) Petersen, was born January 27, 1896, in Audubon County, Iowa where she attended country school. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. At the age of 14 Maria had to quit school to keep house for her father and young sisters.

December 15, 1915, Maria was united in marriage with Wilhelm Misselhorn in Manning, by Reverend John Ansorge. Maria lived in the Manning area all of her life, moving to the town of Manning in 1925. She worked at Priebe's for many years, also at the Hansen-Pahde Store and lastly at the Corner Cafe until her retirement. Marie moved to the Terrace Apartments in 1976 and remained there until moving to the Manning Plaza in 1988.

Marie suffered a broken hip and was taken to the Manning General Hospital where she died early Sunday morning, March 17, 1991, at the age of 95 years, 1 month, and 18 days.

Maria was preceded in death by her husband in 1956; by her daughter, Elaine Davis, in 1988; by her daughter, Marian, who died in infancy; by three sisters: Lena Grimm, Lily Nissen, and Malinda Grage; and by one brother, Carl Petersen.

Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Rita Misselhorn, of Manning; her son-in-law, Fern Davis; three grandchildren: Twyla Misselhorn; Kent Misselhorn and his wife Charlene; and Keith Misselhorn; two great-grandchildren, Jeremy and Jennifer Misselhorn; two step-great-grandchildren, Rachael and Clinton Backhaus; a sister, Alma Petersen, of Hardwick, Minnesota; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Maria was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Manning.
