Margaret Marie (Hargens) Steckelberg

Funeral services were held March 11 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla for Mrs. Marie Margaret Steckelberg, who had lived in this vicinity since coming from Germany to America in 1891. Rev. R.W. Natzke officiated.

Marie Margaret was second oldest child of Peter and Anna Hargens, born December 26, 1872, at Marne, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. On April 5, 1889, her family came to America and settled at Denison.

On November 2, 1891, she married Fritz William Steckelberg and this union was blessed with five sons and one daughter. Mrs. Steckelberg was one of the first members of the Ladies Aid Society of Trinity Lutheran Church and remained a member throughout her life. Mr. and Mrs. Steckelberg lived in Walkertown until they moved to the Friendship home in Audubon in February 1959.

Mrs. Steckelberg had been ill about three weeks before her death on March 9, 1962. She was 89 years, 2 months, and 11 days.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, one grandchild, and one great-grandchild.

She is survived by three brothers, Chris and Herman Hargens of Manning, Henry Hargens of Sidney, Nebraska; three sisters: Annie Benninghaus of Sidney, Nebraska; Mrs. Lena Meyers of Arcadia; Mrs. Bertha Jarvis of San Diego, California; five sons: Henry of San Diego, California; Edward of Sioux City; Fred of Sioux City; William of Denison; and Meinhardt of Manilla, and one daughter, Mrs. Don Champion of Denison; 18 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren besides other relatives and friends.
