Margaret May Summerville was born near Manning on July 25, 1913, and was the oldest daughter of William and Isabelle Summerville. She was baptized in the Presbyterian faith and confirmed in the Methodist faith.
In February 1918, Margaret's family moved to the Gray vicinity. She was graduated from Gray High School in 1931.
On November 19 of that year, she was united in marriage with Alfred Spies of Manning. To this union, four children were born, Russell, Donna, Stanley, and Kenneth. In March of 1934 Margaret became a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Manning.
Margaret and Alfred lived on the Spies farm three miles Northeast of Manning for nearly forty years. After Alfred's death on August 31, 1979, she moved to Manning.
She is survived by four children; Russell Spies and his wife Mildred of Gray; Donna Spies Zerwas and her husband Dick of Omaha; Stanley Spies and his wife Joleen of Manilla and Kenneth Spies and his wife Geri of Manning. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, a sister, Evelyn (Mrs. Darrell) Bales of Carroll and a brother, David Summerville, of Vista, California.
Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, William in 1966 and Isabelle in 1977. Margaret was a member of the Zion Lutheran Congregation in Manning, the Dorcas Society, Bible Study Group, and was also a member of the Manning Hospital and Plaza Auxiliary, and of the VFW Auxiliary.
She died on Saturday, May 19, at Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha at the age of 70 years, nine months and 24 days.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 22, at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning with Pastor Paul Krumm officiating.
Music was provided by Connie Siepker, organist, and Larry Genzen, vocalist.
Interment was in the Manning City Cemetery. Casketbearers were, Delton Gruhn, Tim Hockett, Russell Mohr, Frank Handlos, Virgil Genzen and Marvin Wiemann. Honorary, casketbearers were Charles Gruhn, Bernard Lengemann, William Brus and Albert Klocke.
