Mamie, daughter of August Jacob and Maria Magdalena (Ehlers) Plahn, was born June 20, 1904, in Aspinwall, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith. She attended country school in Carroll County near her home. Following her schooling, she worked at home for her parents and attended Snow’s Dressmaking College in Manning.
On September 19, 1923, Mamie was united in marriage with Gilbert Jacob Sievertsen at Denison, Iowa. One son was born to this union. Gilbert and Mamie worked together on the Sievertsen family farm. From 1936 to 1942 her husband worked for Crawford County in road maintenance but they continued to live on the farm. Gilbert then returned to fulltime farming until 1979 when they retired and moved into Manilla. Due to failing health, Mamie and Gilbert became residents of the Manilla Manor Nursing Home in April of 1995. They celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary in 1996. Her husband died on January 31, 1997.
Mamie was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Manilla, and at one time was a member of the Lutheran Guild. She enjoyed needlework and planting and tending her flowers.
The past year Mamie’s health deteriorated and she died at the Manilla Manor on Tuesday, December 28, 1999, at the age of 95 years, 6 months and 8 days.
Besides her husband and parents, Mamie is preceded in death by two sisters and their husbands Edna and LeRoy Schumann and Olga and Max Schultz.
She is survived by her son Garnett Sievertsen and his wife Joleen of Manilla; two grandchildren Jeff Sievertsen and his wife Rhonda of Manilla and Lori and her husband Greg Gaskill of Irwin; four great-grandchildren Kayla and Jarad Gaskill and Lukas and Lynsie Sievertsen; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
