Magreta Oppermann
OBITUARY.
Mrs. Claus (Magreta) Oppermann passed away at her home last Thursday morning, March
17, 1904, at six o'clock, after a two years siege of suffering. Although the family has known
for some time that the Angel of Death was near, still that did not lessen the sorrow in each
heart as she passed to her home above. She is the wife of Claus Oppermann and resides
one and three-quarters of a mile northwest of town. She was born at Alt Rennebeck,
Schleswig Germany, January 16, 1842. She was married to Claus Oppermann at Erfde,
Schleswig, in 1868. She came to America in the year 1874, first living at Davenport, then at
Clinton, and then in Crawford County. Ten children were born to bless this union, seven of
which are living. They are Johann Anna or Mrs. Peter Karstens, Bertha or Mrs. Gus Vehrs,
Hartwig, Mina, Wilhelm, and Albert. Mrs. Oppermann was a true good woman and to know
her was to be her friend. Although an invalid for the past two years, she has always been
bright and cheerful and full of hope that she would be better soon. But God deemed it
otherwise and called the aching soul home. The funeral was held from the house Saturday
afternoon, Rev, Martens officiating, and the remains laid to rest in the Manning Cemetery.
We extend our sympathy to the bereaved family in this their hour of sorrow.
March 24, 1904
Dr. Patterson, of Westside, was called to the Claus Oppermann home to see Mrs.
Oppermann two days before she died. He was called by phone and he answered them by
saying he was sick and it would be a hard task for him to come but that he would send
another doctor. But Mrs. Oppermann's faith in Dr. Patterson was so strong that she did not
want anyone else and said if she couldn't have him she did not want anyone, so the doctor
got up from his sick bed and came. He had to stop on the road several times and rest but he
finally made the journey and did all that he could for the dying woman and Mr. Oppermann
and family cannot praise Dr. Patterson too highly, and his kindness will be cherished in their
minds as long as they live.
