Mrs. Maggid M. Olson, 87, died Thursday noon, August 4, 1960, at the Pfoltner Nursing Home in Manning. Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Irwin Methodist Church with the Rev. Harold Schirn, officiating.
Pallbearers will be the grandsons. Burial will be in Kirkman, Iowa, Cemetery.
The body will be taken from the Ohde Funeral Home to the church at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Mrs. Olson was born September 26, 1872, at Goshen, Indiana, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. Gardner.
Mrs. Olson lived three miles north of Irwin and has been hospitalized and in the nursing home for one and a half years. She is survived by her children: Clifford of Shelby, Mrs. Homer (Beulah) Clark, Botna, Burtram, and Roy of Irwin, Clyde, of Manilla.
Fifteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive her.
Her husband, Joseph, died in 1952.
Joseph Lindley Olson was born April 23, 1873, near New Sharon, Iowa, and was the son of Tobias and Christiana Olson. While still a small boy he moved with his family to Shelby County, Iowa and settled near Kirkman. Here he spent his boyhood attending rural schools and assisting with farm work until reaching manhood. He then spent three years working in the steel mills and smelter in Pueblo, Colorado.
Early in the year of 1899 he returned to his old home and on March 12, 1899, he was united in marriage with Maggie M. Gardner. To this union were born five children, four sons and one daughter. This couple established a home and started farming near Kirkman, remaining in this vicinity six years. At this time they purchased a farm four miles northeast of Irwin, moving there during the spring of 1906. This farm remained his life time home up to the time of his death. Joe became critically ill on Sunday, April 6th and was taken to the Manning General Hospital. He passed away there one week later on Easter morning, April 13, 1952, at the age of seventy-eight years, eleven months and twelve days.
During his lifetime at this farm home Mr. Olson spent many of the active years of his life in public service, having been Secretary of the Farmers Mutual Telephone Company, Township Assessor and a member of the Shelby County Board of Supervisors for nine years. During this time he was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Federal Land Bank of Omaha.
Joe was a member of various organizations, including the Odd Fellows Lodge, Woodmen of the World, the Masonic Lodge and the Eastern Star of Irwin. He was baptized when a young man and with his wife joined the Methodist church at Irwin, Iowa, during his later years.
Mr. and Mrs. Olson observed their golden wedding anniversary three years ago.
He is survived by his wife, Maggie and the following children; Clifford H. of Shelby; Mrs. Beulah Clark and Bertram, of Irwin; Clyde L. of Manilla, and J. LeRoy at home. Also 14 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and three brothers and two sisters, having been preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one half-brother.
Funeral services were held in the Methodist Church in Irwin on Tuesday afternoon, April 15, with the Rev. Beaty L. McDonald and the Rev. A. Chris Itse in charge. Interment was at Rose Hill cemetery, Kirkman with graveside services in charge of Sardius Chapter No. 444, of Irwin. Pall bearers were Roy Larson, Karl Paulsen, James Wickersham, Willie Carter, Peter Kjelgaard and Francis Kerr.
