MABEL ANNA WEEMS
Funeral services for Mabel Anna Weems were held Monday, March 22,1993, at 10:30 a .m. at the United Methodist church, Manning, Iowa. Dr. Charles Curl officiated the service with Carolyn Miller as vocalist and Janet Myer as organist. Interment was held in Manning City Cemetery, with Darrell Weems, Rhonda Jamshidi, Terry Christensen, Jack Borkowski, Kathy Powell, and Kaelyn Guerra as casketbearers.
Mabel, daughter of Nettie French and Frank Crouch, was born August 9,1900, on their farm near Irwin, Iowa. Due to complications from pneumonia and whooping cough her twin sister, Maude Pearl, died in 1902. Mabel attended country schools near her home and worked as a hired girl for various neighbors and friends whenever the need arose .She enjoyed being a pianist in the local church.
On November 5, 1919, Mabel was united in marriage with Earl Weems. Their first home was southwest of Botna where they were employed by Marion and Nettie Armentrout. Eldis "Bud," their only son was born on this farm.
In 1921 the family moved to the Charles Wooster farm three miles south and 3/4 mile east of Botna. This was the Weems' home until December 1, 1946, when, due to Earl's ill health, they were forced to have a sale and move to Manning. All five of their daughters, Evelyn, Leona, Lois, Opal, and La Rae, were born on this farm.
Earl passed away in April 1958 and Mabel continued to live in their house until February 1977 when she sold the house and moved to Elm Crest Apartment #14. This was her home until January 1989, when after a hospitalization, she entered the Manning Plaza. In the fall of 1989 Mabel suffered a heart attack she suffered a stroke on February 9, 1993, and after that time her health began to fail. She died on Thursday, March 18, 1993, at the Manning Plaza at the age of 92 years, 7 months, and 9 days.
Besides her husband and twin sister, she was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Evelyn Borkowski, in 1982; two grandchildren: Diane Hemminger-Flores and her husband, in 1988 and Douglas Weems in 1990; six great-grandchildren: Jeremy Short, Jacob Weems, Jeffery Williams, Natasha Flores, Sheri Luetje and Cody Heller; two sons-in-law: George Wegner, in 1971 and Richard Heller in 1983; and three brothers: Ora, Ivyl, and Ancel Crouch.
Survivors include her children: Eldis "Bud" Weems and his wife Norma, of Manning; Leona (Mrs. Lewis) Hemminger of Elk Horn, Lois Wegner of Manning, Opal (Mrs. Dale) Christensen of Humbolt, LaRae Heller of Manning; a son-in-law, Harold Borkowski of Manning; 28 grandchildren; 48 great grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren; two brothers; Harold (Clara) Crouch and Virgil (Mildred) Crouch; a sister-in-law Bernice Crouch all of Irwin; a brother-in-law Eldon Weems, of the Manning Plaza; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
