Mabel Ellen Mullen
The Rite of Christian Burial for Ellen Mullen were held Tuesday, April 14, 1992, at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Manning, Iowa. Reverend Father Ralph Reinhart was the celebrant with Sacred Heart Choir providing the music. Interment was held in St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Denison, Iowa with John E. Frenking, Jeffrey W. Frenking, Rourke Mullen, Michael P. Frenking, Marty Mullen and Thomas Weinandt as casketbearers. Rosary was held Monday, April 13, 1992, at 5:30 p.m. at Ohde Funeral Home, Manning, Iowa.

Mabel, daughter of Martin and Ann (Carey) Houlihan, was born April 18, 1900, at Charter Oak, Iowa. She graduated from Denison High School in 1918 and attended Clark College in Dubuque where she earned her degree in education. After graduation Mabel taught school in rural Crawford County and worked in the Denison Post Office. On April 30, 1930, she was united in marriage with Emmett Francis Mullen at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. They lived in Denison for a brief period, then moved to the Plattsmouth and Hastings, Nebraska area. They then lived in Texas, Oklahoma, and Iowa before settling in Illinois. During this period of life, Mabel was a homemaker and a teacher.

After the death of her husband in 1965 Mabel moved to Omaha, Nebraska and various other places in the United States where she taught school. She even taught at an American school in Madrid, Spain, when she was living with her daughter there. At one time she served in VISTA, participating in the Headstart Program. Prior to her move to Manning, Iowa in November 1991, Mabel had lived with her daughter in Cincinnati, Ohio. She led a very active and service oriented life. She was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Manning.

Mabel died on Saturday, April 11, 1992, at the Manning General Hospital, Manning, Iowa, at the age of 91 years, 11 months, and 24 days.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; by a brother, Carey Houlihan; and by three sisters: Marie, Houlihan, Mildred Ledham, and, Viola Willey.

Survivors include her children: Emmett Mullen and his wife,, Donna, of Manning; Nadine and her husband, Walter Robertor, of Las Vegas, Nevada; and Noreen and her husband, John Frenking, of Omaha, Nebraska; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Vera, and her husband, A.W. Stone, of San Diego, California; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
