LuVerne Marie, daughter of Detlef and Metha (Joachimsen) Vinke, was born December 11, 1919, on the family farm in Hayes Township, Crawford County, Iowa. She attended rural school near her home, and following her schooling Verne worked for families in New York and Illinois.
In the early 1940s, Verne was united in marriage with Melvin "Stub" Killeen. Four children were born to this union. They made their home at Avoca, Ringsted and Templeton.
On August 10, 1970, Verne was blessed with a second marriage with Emmert "Pete" Petersen. Verne and Pete farmed various farms near Iowa City, McGregor, Pocahontas and Clear Lake before settling near Mason City. For more than ten years, Verne assembled two-way radios at E.F. Johnson Radios in Clear Lake, retiring in the mid-1980s.
Verne enjoyed bowling, fishing, baking, growing African violets, playing cards, playing bingo, Charlie Pride concerts and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
On Tuesday, August 5, 2003, Verne died at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa, following a brief battle with cancer. She was 83 years, 7 months, and 25 days of age.
She is preceded in death by her parents and three brothers: Ralph, Averill, and Delbert Vinke.
She is survived by her loving husband Pete Petersen of Mason City; four children: Pat and husband Bill Burt of Webster City; Judith and husband Stephan Bishop of Scranton; Donna and husband Bernie Seaman Jr. of Canyon Country, California; Robert Killeen and wife Robyn of Audubon; step-daughter Victoria and husband Terry Garnes of Coon Rapids; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a sister Lois and husband Floyd Drake of Audubon; sisters-in-law Odessa Vinke and Loretta Vinke, both of Manning; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
LuVerne Petersen, 83, of Mason City, formerly of Manning, died Tuesday August 5, 2003, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the United Methodist Church in Manning. Burial will be in the Manning Cemetery.
Visitation was held on Thursday at the Ohde Funeral Home in Manning.
She is survived by her husband, Pete Petersen of Mason City; children, Pat Burt of Webster City, Judith Bishop of Scranton, Donna Seaman of Canyon Country, California, and Robert Killeen of Audubon; step-children, Victoria Garnes of Coon Rapids and Melvin Killeen of Sun City, Arizona; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lois (Mrs. Floyd) Drake, of Audubon.
Daughter of Dethlef and Metha (Joachimsen) Vinke, she was born December 11, 1919.
