From the Monitor: Monday, October 26th, 1914, death claimed one of the pioneers of Manning, Mrs. Lucinda Nickum, nee Lucinda Ella Hays, after a prolonged sickness. For a number of years she had been a patient sufferer, and although given every medical attention possible could not obtain relief. Some time ago she was taken to the Carroll hospital for treatment, but returned without benefit. Of late she has sunk slowly and surely, and peacefully passed away to join those gone before to the world beyond the grave.
She was born July 20, 1857, and was at the time of her death 55 years, 3 months, and 6 days old. At Chapel Hill, Missouri, October 20, 1872, she was led to the altar of marriage by Jacob L. Nickum, and they lived there until moving to Vail, Iowa. It was here that the two children, Nora and Joseph were born. In the spring of 1882, they moved to Manning. Here four children were born, Nora (Mrs. Frank E.) Way, of Onawa, Iowa; Daisy (Mrs. Jacob F. Kortum, of Ottumwa, Iowa; Henry Nickum, of Dedham, Iowa; Wilson Nickum, Joseph Nickum, and Lawrence "Si" Nickum of Manning, Iowa.
The husband died in April 1900, fourteen years ago.
Grandma Nickum was a very religious woman, and had great faith in a Christian hereafter, but on account of prior health was unable to attend religious services as she desired. She was taken in full membership of the Methodist Church and left this earth ready to meet her Redeemer. Rev. Lyles conducted the funeral services Wednesday at 10 o'clock at the home, after which kind hands took the body to the Manning Cemetery where it was laid at rest to sleep the sleep of the faithful.
Thus one by one Manning's pioneers are being called Home, and it will be but a few short years till those now in the full strength of manhood and womanhood will join the millions that have gone before. Her life the last few years was one of suffering, yet she complained but little, taking great pride in her children. They were devoted to her, and will find a vacancy that can never be filled because of their loss of mother.
