Leona Mary Schultz was born on June 27, 1907, at Manning, Iowa, the daughter of August and Elvina (Grage) Schwieso. She died after a long illness on Sunday, December 25, 1977, at St. Luke's Hospital, Sioux City, Iowa at the age of 70.
Leona received her formal education in the Schleswig area schools. She was baptized and later confirmed into the Lutheran faith.
On February 1, 1928, Leona was united in marriage to Herman Schultz at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa. Together they made their home on a farm near Schleswig. To this union were born a son and a daughter.
In 1964, they retired and moved to Schleswig. Herman died in 1972 and Leona continued to make Schleswig her home.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Leona was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Survivors include: one son, Virgene of Denison, one daughter Karen, Mrs. Bill Frandsen of Cherokee, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Also by one brother Albert Schwieso of Manilla and four sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Smith of Denison, Helen, Mrs. Harry Kral of Vail, Mrs. Ann Steffen of Utah and Ruby, Mrs. Charles Waggoner of California.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 28, 1977, at 10:30 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig, Iowa. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery. The Rev. Theodore Letzring officiated at the services. Music at the services was provided by the Ladies Choir and Mrs. Leroy Hight, organist. Pallbearers included: Joseph Kral, Charles Richert, Gerald Boger, John Schultz, Robert Schwieso, and Dennis Couch.
