Mrs. Herbert Schroeder
Funeral services for Mrs. Herbert Schroeder were held Sunday, August 5, 1979 at 2:00 p.m. at the Ohde Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Joel Wright of the First Presbyterian Church in Manning officiating. Organist was Mrs. Bonita Hagedorn and vocalist was Mrs. Judy Joens. Interment was in Manning Cemetery and casketbearers were Lyle Podey, Roger Podey, Monte Crichton, Steven Jons, Patrick Wuestewald, Larry Stangl, Gary Anderson and Daniel Weis. The Ohde Funeral Home in Manning was in charge of arrangements.
Leona Johanna Caroline daughter of Edward and Dorothea Vinke Grimm, was born May 30, 1904 in Carroll County, Iowa. Leona spent her childhood in the Manning Community and graduated from Manning High School in 1922. She taught in the rural schools near Manning until her marriage to Herbert Schroeder on October 6, 1926. Three children were born to this union.
After raising her family Leona returned to teaching in the rural schools of Iowa Township for five years starting in 1954. Leona and Herbert moved to Manning in 1970. She has been in failing health for a long time and entered the Manning General Hospital June 26, 1979, where she passed away Thursday evening, August 2, 1979, at the age of 75 years, 2 months and 2 days.
Leona was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church in Manning, active in the U.P.W. and the Busy Thimbles.
She was preceded in death by her parents and by two brothers, Melvin and Clousie Grimm.
She is survived by her husband, Herbert, by one son, Wayne Schroeder of Manning; by two daughters, Marilyn, Mrs. Dale Jons of Westside, and Cleone, Mrs. Frederick Podey of Denison; by 12 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Mohr and Mrs. Dolores Balukoff of Manning; five brothers; Edwin and Ernest Grimm of Manning, Paul Grimm of Moline, Illinois, George Grimm of Pine Bluff, North Carolina and Willis Grimm of Missouri Valley, Iowa; as well as by many other relatives and friends.
