Funeral services for Leona K. Sander were held Tuesday, May 25, 1993, at the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon. Dr. Jerry Binns officiated the service. Interment was held in the Manning City Cemetery in Manning, Iowa, with Marvin Christensen, Lloyd Kelly, Bernard Owen, Merlene Thompson, Jr., Bill Sander and Duane Schmidt as casketbearers.

Leona K. Sander, the daughter of George and Anna Rademan Ohde, was born November 10, 1905, in Manning, Iowa and died May 22, 1993, at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 87 years, 6 months and 12 days.

She was baptized and confirmed at the Presbyterian Church in Manning, Iowa. She attended Manning Community Schools graduating with the High School Class of 1922.

On July 6, 1923 she was united in marriage to Roy H. Sander in Avoca, Iowa. Leona was employed as a clerk at the RoberWehrman Department Store in Manning. Later, she managed the Council Oak Grocery Store in Manning during World War II. In 1947 they moved to Audubon. Leona worked in the Audubon County Soil Conservation (ASCS) office. Roy purchased the McFadden Funeral Home in 1953 and she helped him operate it until they retired and sold the funeral home in 1964. Roy died September 16, 1988. Leona maintained their home until she became a resident of the Friendship Home in March of 1991. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon. Leona was a member of the Eldeen Club for many years.

Preceding her in death in addition to her husband were her parents and her brothers-in-law and her sister-in-law, Ray and Golda Sander and Herbert Sander.

Survivors include her daughter and her husband, Donna and Lyle Joens of Audubon; her grandchildren: Lt. Col. Keith and Connie Joens of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio; Kathleen Carlton of Chicago, Illinois; her great-grandchildren: Carrie Joens and Christopher Joens, both of Dayton, Ohio; her sister-in-law, Erna Sander of Manning; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.


Leona Sander is buried in the Manning City Cemetery.
