Leo Joseph, son of John and Clara (Lechtenberg) Sextro, was born March 16, 1922, on a farm near Butte, Nebraska. He started school in Butte, however, that same year when he was five years old the family moved to the Manning area in Iowa. He attended school in Templeton for one year and then finished his education in rural school near his home.

Leo farmed in the Manning area all his life. He was always involved in conservation efforts, which included buffer strips and terraces. He settled on his own farm north of Manning in 1962 and, though he retired from active farming in 1986, he continued to live on his farm where he had been for over 44 years.

Leo was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Manning and an honorary member of the Templeton Council of Knights of Columbus. He also belonged to the Farm Bureau and Pheasants Forever. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing cards, walking and riding his four-wheeler. Leo was a great supporter of local high school athletic teams. Throughout his life he enjoyed eating out at Saunders Steakhouse and later Cliff's Place and Deb's Corner Cafe. He felt that he had the best neighbors and enjoyed being with them.

On September 24, 2016, Leo died at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll at the age of 94 years, 6 months, and 8 days.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Edna Sextro, Dorothy (Leon) Masching, Ruth Vanderheiden, Maxine Meier and Helen (Joe) Lampe; and brothers Norbert Sextro, Herbert (Janet) Sextro and Ed Sextro.

Leo is survived by sisters: Marie Sextro of Carroll; brother Leonard (Delores) Sextro of Manning and sister-in-law Dora Sextro of Surprise, Arizona; brother-in-law Warren (Rosemary) Meier of Omaha, Nebraska; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
