Last Rites Held For L.D. Wycoff
The Manning Monitor Thursday, September 2, 1937

Lenard DeWitt Wycoff was born August 8, 1875, at Elmore, Illinois, the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Carlos and Virginia (Slygh) Wycoff. In the year 1889, he, with his parents and brothers and sisters, moved to Iowa in the Botna vicinity where he resided until his death, August 26, 1937.

On March 1st, 1905, he was united in marriage to Emma Johanna Pattee and to this union were born two daughters, Keitha and Goldie, the latter having died in infancy.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, a sister, Mrs. Ella Gordon, a brother John and a brother Stephen.

Those of his relatives left to mourn his passing are his devoted wife, his daughter, Mrs. Abner Gray; two grandchildren, Milford and Iona Gray; a brother, Liston and a sister, Mrs. Ollie Stoker.

He was baptized and became a member of the Presbyterian church of Manning on Easter Sunday, in 1935.

Mr. Wycoff was a generously provident and kindly man. His philosophies were unique and original and we have aptly been referred to as the “Will Rogers” of his community.

Concern was felt over his failing health early in the summer and August 12 he entered the Wyatt hospital for observance and treatment. It was found necessary to call a specialist surgeon from Omaha, who performed an operation last Sunday. Following this, Mr. Wycoff's condition became gradually weaker, until death came Thursday evening at ten o’clock. The community grieves over his passing and many friends will miss his kindly greetings. His sorrowing wife has lost a loving companion, his daughter, a kind father and his grandchildren a grandfather, even mindful of their welfare.

“It is a good thing to be rich, and a good thing to be strong, but it is a better thing to be beloved by many friends.”

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the Ohde Funeral Home with Rev. G.E. Steele officiating. Interment was in the Manning Cemetery. Pallbearers were Colin Campbell, Joe Shaser, David Souter, Fred Ehlers, Merlene Thompson and Wilford Moore.
