Mrs. Lena Smallfield

Mrs. Lena Smallfield, 91, died Friday, January 13, 1978, at a Flandreau, South Dakota, rest home.

Lena Heesch, daughter of Johannes and Emma (Rathjen) Heesch was born in Manning, Iowa, in 1886. She married Albert Smallfield on November 16, 1910, and they farmed in the Elkton, South Dakota, area until his death in 1952.

Survivors include four sons, Elmer, Herb, Lloyd, and Harold, all of Elkton; a daughter, Mrs. Leona Olson, Humansville, Missouri; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Henry and Louis Heesch, both of Elkton, and two sisters, Mrs. Carl Jensen, Elkton, and Mrs. Ella Knuth, Renton, Washington.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Peace United Church of Christ. Buried in Elkton City Cemetery.

Lloyd Smallfield
Lloyd A. Smallfield, Elkton, died Thursday, December 18, 2003, at the Brookings Hospital in Brookings, South Dakota.

Funeral services were Tuesday, December 23, 2003, at Elkton United Parish in Elkton, South Dakota, with Rev. Daren Junker officiating.

Burial was in the Elkton City Cemetery, Elkton, South Dakota.

Lloyd A. Smallfield was born May 18, 1916, on a farm in Moody County, South Dakota, to Albert and Lena (Heesch) Smallfield. He attended Harmony Country School. On August 9, 1941, he entered the U.S. Army and was discharged on September 21, 1945. During that time, he was a POW for nine months before being liberated by the Allies. He returned home to farm with his brother, Harold, until they retired in 1992 and moved into Elkton. Lloyd moved to Prairie Crossing in Brookings in December 2002.

He was a member of Elkton United Parish. He also enjoyed the Elkton Museum and was quietly generous to several organizations.

He was survived by his brother, Elmer (Mabel) of Brookings; a sister, Leona Olson, of Lathrop, Missouri; a niece; and five nephews.

He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Herbert and Harold.
