Funeral of Mrs. Hans Ohrt held Monday

Another peaceful home was made desolate when the angel of death appeared in our midst on Thursday evening, February 8, 1934, entering the Hans Ohrt home north of town and demanding the wife and mother of this estimable family, after a brief illness of but a few days. Great was the shock to the many friends and relatives of this noble woman when the sad report of her sudden death was heard. A pall of gloom is spread over the community and the friends mourn the loss and extend their deepest sympathy to the bereaved family.

Mrs. Hans (Lena) Ohrt was born on February the 15th, 1880, in Scott County, near Davenport, Iowa.

She was the fourth child of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Johannsen of Elkton, South Dakota. On the 15th of February, 1900, she was united in marriage to Hans Ohrt, the ceremony being performed at Carroll, Iowa. They then came to live on a farm eight miles north of Manning and there she spent a most happy married life.

One daughter was born to them, Mrs. Herbert (Elsie) Kroeger, who resides in Manning.

Besides her husband and daughter who mourn her passing there are her aged parents who reside in Elkton, South Dakota, and who about a year ago celebrated the 60th anniversary of their marriage. Two grandchildren are also left to mourn her, Verna Ann and Marlene Mae. Mrs. Ohrt leaves behind two brothers and three sisters: Henry Johannsen, Vela, Minn., John Johannsen, Elkton, South Dakota. The three sisters are, Mrs. Dora Hammer, Elkton, South Dakota, Mrs. Celica Schluter, Alpha, Minn., Mrs. Ella Trautman, Lake Bemton, Minn.
Two sisters proceeded her in death: Mrs. Anna Johannsen who died in 1915; Mrs. Katie Schluter, Alpha, Minn.

Mrs. Ohrt was taken ill quite suddenly a week ago last Monday evening, suffering from a severe chill. A physician was summoned instantly and good progress was evidenced, but later pneumonia developed and she was moved to the Wyatt Hospital, and there on Thursday evening last at 9:00 o'clock in the 53rd year of her age she passed away.

Mrs. Ohrt was a very good woman to all her friends and acquaintances held her in deepest respect. She was a gracious personality, and much sorrow is caused by the untimely passing of this beloved mother and wife.

The funeral services were held Monday, afternoon at the Ohde funeral home. The Rev. E. J. Hough, pastor of the First Presbyterian church of Manning, officiating. The earthly remains were tenderly bedded in their fast-resting place in the Hays Township cemetery.

The pallbearers were Gus Andersen, Otto Greteman, Otto Jentzen, William Fischer, William Gehlsen and Charles Redder.

The attendance at the funeral was very large, denoting the general respect and high esteem in which she was held by those who knew her well. May her soul rest in peace, and may those be comforted who mourn and feel the direct loss the heaviest.
