Mrs. Martens was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William and Sophia (Grube) Kusel and was born December 7, 1877, in Hayes Township, Crawford County, Iowa. She was married January 10, 1900, to Richard Martens.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. William Martens (no relation to Richard) from the family home Tuesday, September 16, and the body laid to rest in the Manning Cemetery. A large concourse of sorrowing friends and relatives followed the remains to the grave.

Mr. Martens having been raised from childhood in this vicinity was well known and universally esteemed for those sterling qualities which go to make up an earnest helpful wife. The sorrowing husband and relatives have the sympathy of all in their bereavement.
