LaVerne, son of Adolph and Nellie (Hansen) Olsen was born February 4, 1921, in Irwin, Iowa. He attended and graduated from Irwin Community Schools. LaVerne worked on the family farm after completing his education.
On September 29, 1944, LaVerne was united in marriage with Audrey Cramer at the Lutheran Church in Irwin. They were the parents of two children and made their home in Manning. LaVerne worked at the Manning Creamery Company for 26 years until it closed. He then worked in the Department of Agriculture for the State of Iowa until his retirement.
LaVerne was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Manning where he served on the Board of Elders, on the finance committee and as an usher. He was a long time member of the Manning Volunteer Fire Department and served as President of the Manning Municipal Gas Board. He was also on the Terrace Apartments Housing Committee and the Board of Directors for the Community Apartments.
In his retirement, LaVerne's hobby was a large apple orchard. He enjoyed working in the orchard as well as entertaining school classes on field trips. The children knew him as "the apple man."
When his health began to fail, LaVerne became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home. He died late Thursday, November 17, 2005, at the Manning Regional Healthcare Center, at the age of 84 years, 9 months and 13 days.
Preceding LaVerne in death are his parents, two sisters Bernice Wareburg and Adeline Stolz and son Steve Olsen in 1976.
His survivors include his wife Audrey Olsen of Manning; daughter Kathy and husband Larry Clement of Fort Dodge; granddaughter Kristi and husband Jeremy Humpal of Indianapolis, IN; three sisters: Eleanor Benson of Harlan; Maxine Browning of Harlan and Gilma and husband Donald Bornholdt of Solon Springs, WI; two sisters-in-law Pauline Graves of Manning and Madlyn Younie of Manilla; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
