Kenneth Carroll, son of Frank and Emma (Voege) Pfannkuch, was born June 18, 1927, at Carroll, Iowa. He was baptized on August 21, 1927, at the Presbyterian Church in Breda. Kenny grew up on a farm in Jackson Township in Crawford County where he attended rural school until 1939. The family then moved two miles south of Manning and Kenny attended country school there and then Manning High School until his senior year, when he entered the United States Navy. Kenny served with the United States Navy, attaining the rank of Water Tender Third Class during World War II. After his honorable discharge in 1946, Kenny went back to high school and graduated with the class of 1947. Kenny was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning on February 19, 1950.

On June 17, 1947, Kenny was united in marriage with Lucille F. Genzen at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. They farmed south of Manning where they raised their four children. Except for one year when Kenny worked at Kuhl and Vogt Hardware Store in Manning, he was a life-long farmer. He retired in 1991 and they moved into Manning. Kenny was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, past member of the American Legion and a life member of the VFW where he served as commander. He was a board member for several years at the Senior Center, where he enjoyed doing volunteer work. He was an avid sports fan, bowled in a league for 35 years and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Kenny was also a member of the Farm Bureau.

Footprints

One night I had a dream. I was walking along the beach with the Lord, and across the skies flashed scenes from my life. In each scene I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand. One was mine, and one was the Lord's.

When the last scene of my life appeared before me, I looked back at the footprints in the sand and to my surprise I noticed that many times along the path of my life there was only one set of footprints. And I noticed that it was at the lowest and saddest times in my life.

I asked the Lord about it. "Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, you would walk with me all the way. But I notice that during the most troublesome times in my life there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why you left my side when I needed you most."

The Lord replied, "My precious child, I love you and would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, where you see only one set of footprints, I was carrying you."
