Obituary:
Kay Diane Subbert, 62, daughter of Marvin & Florence (Stickelburg) Hass, was born November 26, 1945, in Manning, Iowa. She passed away Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at the Hospice Suite at the Community Care Center in Stuart, Iowa. Kay had polio as a child, but she didn't let this stop her from trying everything the other kids were doing. She even tried biking and roller skating (by tying her feet together). Kay's father died at the young age of 39 in a truck accident. Her mother remarried and moved the family but eventually came back to Manning where she died at the age of 81. Kay finished 11th grade in Manning in 1963, and had several jobs including Western Election in Omaha, Nebraska, Monarch Manufacturing in Adel, and Sunny Fresh in Panora, where she worked 12 1/2 years. On July 12, 1964, she was married to Robert E. Subbert in Lidderdale, Iowa. Robert states he met Kay "following a convertible with 6 girls in it" in 1963. To this union two children were born, Kim and Robert "Butch." Kay loved to fish in the Middle Raccoon River along which she and her family lived for 32 years at Panora. She took the kids and family's dog "King," a German Shephard and walked down the hill to the river. The biggest fish she got was a Sturgeon in South Dakota. She also enjoyed crocheting afghans in her spare time, playing cards, gambling, canoeing, and just watching the deer, turkey, coyotes, from her patio window. Her husband describes Kay as friendly and talkative, never meeting a stranger. There was absolutely no discrimination in Kay and she taught her husband the same. She had her opinions and spoke them but respected others opinions whether hers or not. She was a Sunday School teacher, a member of the Ladies group at St. Thomas Lutheran Church, she loved dogs, especially German Shepherds, but this past year she had a Schnauzer. She and her husband raised pigs for a few years and she helped in those chores. Kay didn't let her disability get her down or keep her from doing anything she wanted to do. Kay & Robert loved where they lived on the Middle Raccoon River. Robert states they seldom went on vacations because everything they liked and enjoyed was right there. She is survived by her husband, Robert of Panora; daughter, Kim (David) Buttler of Stuart; son, Robert "Butch" (Connie) Subbert of Stuart; 5 grandchildren: Jessica Buttler, Cody Buttler, Jim Low, Josh Subbert, and Rachel Subbert; brothers Keith Hass of Manning, Kenny Hass of Colorado, Kevin Hass of Glenwood, Kurt Hass of Lewis, and sister Kathy of Manning. She was preceded in death by her parents.
