The last two weeks he lingered between life and death, so the end came not unexpectedly on Friday.
Mr. Schroeder was born in Germany. After serving his time in the Germany Army, he came to this country, locating first in Davenport and later in Muscatine from which place he came to Audubon. He arrived here just as the new town was starting and remained in this city two years. During that time he worked on building the court house which was in progress. He went from here to Gray where he ran a hotel during the period of the building of the Northwestern Railroad.
After five years spent in the town of Gray he moved onto his present farm and remained a resident there until the time of his death.
He was married to Mary D. Schluntz in 1876.
To this union eleven children were born, two dying in infancy. The living children are Peter, Cleveland, Bismarck, all three sons living on farms adjoining the old home place, Mrs. Peter Ohrt, of Manning; Mrs. Charles Ross, of South Dakota; Mrs. Fred Seivers, of Audubon; Mrs. Jack Moore, and Margaret and Elsie who are still at home.
Funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon and was largely attended by friends and acquaintances who had come to pay their last tribute of respect to one they had learned to love for his intelligence and honesty of purpose.
The service was in charge of Rev. Schliepsiek, pastor of the Lutheran Church in Lincoln Township.
Interment was made in Lincoln Center Cemetery.
