Herman Julius, son of Jasper and Alwine (Sievers) Schroeder, was born June 1, 1904, on the family farm in Washington Township, Carroll County, Iowa. Jul was baptized on December 4, 1904 and confirmed on February 20, 1927, at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. He attended rural school near his home. After completing his schooling, Jul remained at home to help on the family farm.
On November 11, 1931, Jul was united in marriage with Naemi Grimm. Four children, Myra, Gary, Gloria, and Delora, were born to this union. Jul and Naemi farmed near Manning on the Schroeder family farm with his brother, John. After John's death in 1952, they continued farming until 1969 when they moved into Manning.
After Naemi died on August 21, 1987, Jul remained in their home and eventually lived in the senior citizen apartments.
Jul was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church and was a member of the Lutheran Laymen's League. He was very interested in 4-H and served as a leader for many years. In his younger years, he and Naemi enjoyed square dancing.
Jul entered the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in March of 1992. After Christmas 1998 his health began to seriously fail and he died there on Friday, January 15, 1999, at the age of 94 years, 7 months, and 14 days.
Besides his wife, parents, and brother, Jul was preceded in death by a daughter, Myra Mohr; and four sisters: Anita Nulle; Ida Joens; Anna Tank; and Laura Musfeldt.
Jul is survived by three children: Gary Schroeder and his wife Joyce of Manning; Gloria and her husband Ed Higgins of Omaha; and Delora and her husband Richard Pfeiffer of Ames; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a son-in-law Robert Mohr of Oakland; a sister, Edna Vollstedt of Manning; a sister-in-law, Blondina Carstens, of Manning; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
