Joseph R. "Joe" Shields

Joseph K. "Joe" Shields, 78, a car salesman and former owner of Shield Market for 10 years, died January 3, 1995, at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 7, 1995, at 10:00 a.m. at the Divine Redeemer Catholic Church, Colorado Springs, Colorado. A Rosary was said at the church Thursday evening, January 6.

Mr. Shields was born April 17, 1916, in Dunlap, Iowa to Timothy L. and Tessie (Coughlin) Shields.
He was married September 25, 1935, to Viola Katherine (Hagge).

He is survived by his wife, Viola; two sons: Joe of Portland, Oregon, and Tom of Colorado Springs; three daughters: Katherine Wilkersen of Fort Worth, Texas, Mary Kovac and Joan Joens, both of Colorado Springs; two sisters: Rita and Marie, both of Nebraska; a brother-in-law and his wife, Melvin and Eldora Hagge, of Denison, IA; seventeen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Shields had lived in Colorado Springs since 1949 and was a member and past exalted ruler of the Elks Club. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Germania Club, Polka Club and was a charter member of the Divine Redeemer Catholic Church.

Previous to 1949 he and his wife, Viola, and family lived in Manning. He owned a grocery and meat market and was a member of the Sacred Heart Church.
