JOHN WUNDER

It is with regret and sorrow that the Monitor is called upon to chronicle the death of our noble townsman John Wunder. His death occurred at 2:00 p. m. at the Saint Mary's hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, on the 19th day of July. Mr. Wunder being apparently physically strong, had been ailing for some time with some minor ailments and went to Rochester to seek relief at the same time his health being weak. He submitted to an operation which did not cause his death, which was due to heart failure. The many friends were shocked when the sad news arrived that he had suddenly passed away. All that medical skill and tender care could do to relieve him was done but of no avail. The Angel of death had marked him and when the suit had slightly turned on its downward path he breathed his last and passed peacefully to his eternal sleep.

May He who permitted in His all-wise plans this great sorrow, to cause loving hearts to bleed, also send the balm that will heal the deep wounds, and may He draw closer to him the hearts that suffer and loved the most.

John Wunder was born on August 7, 1859, in Scott County, Iowa, and died on July 19, 1927, at the age of 67 years 11 months and 12 days. On February 25, 1888, he was united in marriage to Miss Minnie Stoltenberg, at Davenport, Iowa. In this same year the happy couple moved west-ward to Crawford county, on a farm north of Aspinwall, where they worked and toiled until 1919 when they decided to retire from active farm life and take life easy, when they moved to Manning and purchased their beautiful home on Second street.

Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Wunder of which one son Johny died in infancy. Those who survive and are left to mourn his death are: One daughter Katie, Mrs. Ed Paesler, and one son Harry, and two grandchildren, Johnny and Helen Jahn. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Julia Rathjens of Caeur Da Lene, Idaho, and Minnie Keppe of Davenport, Iowa, and four brothers, Fred of Hartley, Ia., Louie and Charley of Dixon, Iowa, and William of Manning, and many other relatives and a host of friends

Funeral services were held on Friday, July 22nd, at 2:00 p. m. at the Presbyterian Church, the Reverend Howland officiating. As pallbearers acted Jurgen Joens, Henry Fischer, Chris Tank, William Nulle, August F. Hansen, and Charles Ossenkop.

Relatives present from outside were his brother Fred and son Raymond, of Hartley, Iowa, his brother Louie of Dixon, Iowa, his brother-in-law, Charley Hamann and his four daughters and two sons of Persia, Iowa, and Mr. and Mrs. Peter Jacobsen of Avoca, Iowa.

The attendance at the funeral was very large and many and beautiful were the floral offerings, tributes denoting the general respect and high esteem in which he was held by all those who knew him and valued his friendship very high.

Today we miss his friendly greeting, his neighborly advice which he always extended in a cordial, friendly way. The whole community extends sincere sympathy to those who mourn the loss of the dear departed.
