It is with sincere sorrow that we are called upon this week to chronicle the death of one our highly respected and longtime citizens, John C. Schwiesow.
Mr. Schwiesow had been in failing health for quite some time but always managed to come uptown every day until about two weeks ago when he became bedfast and passed away early Sunday morning, November 22, 1936. He will be greatly missed by everyone as he had never been out of Aspinwall for more than a few hours at a time and his familiar figure will be sadly lacking on our streets. He had resided in Aspinwall for 23 years, did dray work and was marshal for about 20 years, and mail messenger for over 13 years.
He was born in Pommern, Germany, February 12, 1859, and passed away at the age of 77 years, 9 months and 10 days. He came to America with his parents, Maria and Frederick Schwiesow at the age of 12. They settled in Wisconsin where they resided for 3 years and then moved to Crawford County.
On November 25, 1882, he was married to Bertha Wenzel and lived in Crawford County since with the exception of one year in Carroll County. This union was blessed with ten children. Seven of who preceded their father in death, namely Louis, Amanda, Fred, Herman, Elsie, Johnny, and Milda. Those surviving are his invalid wife, and son, Walter, daughter, Rose, at home, and Marie, Mrs. H.L. Schroeder and four grandchildren, all in Aspinwall; also two brothers, Will and August Schwiesow, of Manilla; three sisters and two brothers having preceded him in death. A large number of other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock in the home and 2 o'clock in the Manilla Lutheran church with Rev. John Ansorge in charge. Interment was made in the Nishnabotna Cemetery near Manilla. Pall bearers were Louie Ehrichs, Emil Ehrichs, Louis Schroeder, George Peters, Fred Boyens and Will Hansen. We extend our sincere sympathy to the mourners in their sorrow.
