JOHN NISSEN
A FINE MAN TAKEN

Mr. John Nissen was born in the province of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, Oct. 7, 1865. Here his boyhood was spent and at the age of fifteen his parents died leaving him an orphan. Prior to this time a brother and sister had emigrated to the United States. When he became a year older, at the age of sixteen, he and another sister likewise came to the United States, and settled in Iowa township, Crawford County, Iowa. He was married to Miss Louisa Kruse June 3, 1887, and lived south of Aspinwall for thirteen years then they moved to Shelby County, Iowa. After a residence of some seven years they returned to the old neighborhood in Crawford County south of Aspinwall, which became their home until his death.

At an early age he was confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Germany, which was his religious faith until his death. He was the father of nine children, the eldest of whom, a little girl died in infancy. He is the father of Mr. George Nissen, whose family has appeared in our prints at recently. This son heard his country's call a year ago last September and after sufficient training in American cantonment, he took his place beside the American soldiery across the seas who fought so gallantly in behalf of the great world cause of democracy. He gave good service and paid the price of courage. He went over the top several times and was seriously wounded in battle. He has finally returned to this native shore, but at this time, he is recuperating in the debarkation hospital at Staten Island, and was unable to be present upon this sad occasion. This sheds extra luster to the father's name as he goes to his grave, and those who survive are worthy to receive congratulations for the gallant of a heroic son and brother.

Those who survive to mourn his demise are his wife and eight children, one brother and six grandchildren. The children are Mrs. Alfred Schroeder who lives in the home community south of Aspinwall, Iowa, Ernest of Manning, Iowa, George at the debarkation hospital, Staten Island, Alfred, Minnie, John, Charles, Rossie at home. The brother, Mr. Chris Nissen resides at Boyer, Iowa.

The deceased was in declining health for the last two years and passed to his reward Jan. 24, 1919, age 53 years, 3 months and 17 days.

Funeral services were conducted at the home one mile south of Aspinwall on Monday Jan 27, 1919 at 2 o'clock P.M., Rev A.T. Aller of Manning officiating after which the remains were born to their last resting place in the Manning cemetery.

The deceased was a man always ever ready to give a hand to a friend and neighbor. He was industrious, saving and honest, and above the average in intelligence. He realized the blessings of our country and was one of the staunch supporters. He will be sadly missed by all, especially those dear to him. None can say that he was not a worthy citizen and that he did not leave this world better by his living in it. Those who sorrow have the deepest sympathy of all in their extreme sorrow.
