J. Meiers Killed in Train-Pickup Accident
February 1, 1968, Manning Monitor

A pickup-train accident Wednesday afternoon about 1:05 took the life of a Manning man and his dog at the Great Western tracks intersection on Third Street.

John Meiers, in his early fifties, was killed instantly when a three-car North Western train plowed into the pickup, just east of the Man-Cry-Co Farms. Mr. Meiers was an employee of the Farms; the pickup was owned by Lester Dammann.

County Coroner Roland B. Morrison pronounced the victim dead at the scene, and the body was taken to the Ohde Funeral Home.

According to reports, the air-lines on the brakes of the train were damaged when part of the pickup went under the front and the train was unable to stop until some distance down the track. Wreckage was strewn for more than a mile.

The Carroll County Sheriff's Office, City Police and Highway Patrol investigated the accident. Mr. Meiers is survived by his wife Isabelle, two daughters, and a son.

John Meiers is buried in the Manning Catholic Cemetery.
