A long-time resident of the Manning community, Mr. Martens died Sunday, February 18, 1962, at the Gregg Home in Cherokee, where he had lived since last October.
Surviving are four children: Mrs. Lydia Weideman, Sac City; Raymond Martens, Schleswig; Walter H. Martens, Manning; and Willis Martens, Hyattsville, Maryland; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one brother, Henry Martens, Manning.
Mr. Martens was born October 8, 1876, in Washington Township, the eldest child of Detlef and Caroline Martens. On February 19, 1902, he was married to Adelia Schumann at Carroll. They farmed near Manning until 1944, then moving into town. Mrs. Martens died in 1951.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Martens was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, William, Detlef and Peter Martens; and two sisters, Mrs. Maggie Witt, and Annina Martens.
Serving as pallbearers at the funeral will be six nephews: Alvin W. Martens and Irwin Witt, Manning; Gilbert Martens, Irwin; Rudolph Fonken, Lake City; Eugene Schumann and LeRoy Schuman, Westside.
