Funeral services for Johannes Wilhelm Meggers, 74, were held from the Ohde Funeral home in Manning, Friday afternoon, May 31, 1946, at 2 o'clock with the Rev. Arthur Raeside, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, officiating.
Pallbearers were nephews of the deceased: W.F. Meggers, Eddie Meggers, John Rostermundt, Carl Rostermundt, Johnny Meggers, and Donald Meggers. Burial was in the Manning Cemetery. Clifford M. Johnson, accompanied by Bonita (Mrs. Henry W.) Hagedorn on the organ, sang solos.
Mr. Meggers, who had been ill for the past six months, passed away at his home in Manning about noon Tuesday, May 28, 1946. He was born January 19, 1872, at Clinton, Clinton County, Iowa, the son of Franz Meggers and Anna Wilhelmina Tolck.
In the fall of 1879, he moved with his parents to Western Iowa and they settled on a farm seven miles south of Westside in Carroll County. In 1890, the family moved to a farm in Crawford County eight miles northwest of Manning. He worked on the home farm with his father until the time of his marriage January 9, 1895, to Miss Lena Rostermundt. The marriage took place in the Lutheran Church at Denison with the Rev. F. Lothringer performing the ceremony.
Mr. and Mrs. Meggers celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in their home in Manning in 1945.
He farmed until 1917, when he and Mrs. Meggers retired and purchased a home in Manning where they have made their home since that time.
Mr. Meggers was one of eleven sons in his family. Eight have preceded him in death: Gus in December 1945, one at the age of seven in Clinton, and six in infancy. He is survived by his wife and two brothers, Emil and Frank Meggers of Manning.
He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
