Jochim Schroeder passed away on Sunday morning, October 15, 1939, at the home of his son, Thomas Schroeder, in Goodrich Township, having reached the advanced age of 91 years, 11 months, and 28 days. Mr. Schroeder had been bedfast for the past year.
Jochim Ludwig Schroeder was born on October 17, 1847, in Lutschenburg, Holstein, Germany. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in his native land.
He came to America in 1867, residing in Clinton County, Iowa. Here he was married to Miss Christine Hansen in 1871. To this union eleven children were born, three of whom preceded him in death, namely, Margaret (Mrs. Peter Jepsen), William, and Cornelius. Those surviving him are Louis of Aspinwall; Thomas of Goodrich; Henry and Lena (Mrs. Herman Schuett), of Bloomfield, Nebraska; Joe and August of Lakefield, Minnesota; Fred of Goodrich Township; and Herman or Round Lake, Minnesota.
Mr. and Mrs. Schroeder resided in Clinton County until 1884 when they moved to Jones County, where they farmed for four years, then coming to Crawford County, farming first in Iowa Township and later in Goodrich Township. They retired from farming in 1907, moving to Schleswig, where they made their home until July 1926 when Mrs. Schroeder passed away. Since that time Mr. Schroeder made his home with his son, Thomas.
Besides the above mentioned children he leaves to mourn his death 49 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and one brother, Peter, of Manning.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at the Gottburg Funeral Home in Schleswig in charge of the Rev. C.W. Schmidt of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Members of the Denison Lutheran ladies choir sang two hymns. Interment was made in the Morgan Township Cemetery. Pallbearers were six grandsons: J. Henry, Fred, Herbert, Harvey, Edward, and Willie Schroeder.
