Joan Marie, daughter of John and Ella (Mordhorst) Rowedder, was born June 7, 1933, at Manning General Hospital in Manning, Iowa. Her baptism took place on November 29, 1933, at the Zion Lutheran parsonage in Denison. She was raised on a farm north of Manning, attended country school near her home and graduated from Manning High School in 1951. Joan then worked at the Thrifty Food Store.
Joan met her "match made in heaven," Russ Mohr, through the Walther League program at church. On February 20, 1955, she married Russell Mohr at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Russ had served in the Navy and at the time of their marriage was working as a hired hand for Wiese and Sons. The couple lived in the first home southeast of Manning for six years. Russ began working for George Opperman and continued there for 4 years. During this time Russ and Joan made their home in south Manning. In 1965 they had the opportunity to begin their own farm operation 3 1/2 miles northeast of Manning. Russ and Joan ran a dairy operation and later switched over to an all hog operation. After retiring, they purchased their present home in south Manning in 1998.
Joan was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where she was confirmed as an adult. She served as member of the Ladies Aid, Treasurer of the Fellowship Club and helped assemble the church newsletter. Throughout the years, Joan was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing ball, bowling, roller skating, dancing, fishing, playing cards and putting puzzles together. She thoroughly enjoyed watching her grandchildren in their many activities and spending winters in Texas with Rhonda.
During the summer of 2011, Joan experienced a decline in health. On September 12, she was hospitalized at Manning Regional Healthcare Center where she died Sunday, October 9, 2011, at the age of seventy-eight.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents; her son Jay; four brothers: Leonard in infancy; Gilbert and his wife Ethel; Leroy and his wife Winona; Virgil and his wife Colene; one sister Berdine and her husband Wilmer; Mother-in-law and Father-in-law George and Christina Mohr; sisters-in-law Myra Mohr and Lola Mohr; and a brother-in-law Terry Mishler.
She is survived by: her husband Russ of Manning; her children: Jim and his wife Cherrie of Coon Rapids; Jay’s wife, Julie Mohr of Orange City, Iowa; Jeff and his fiancee Janine Pachelli of Brainerd, Minnesota; and daughter Rhonda of Cypress, Texas; nine grandchildren, Ryan (Susan) Mohr, Chris (Karen) Mohr, Justin (Heather) Mohr, Adam (Caitlin) Mohr, Megan Mohr and special friend, Alex Carlson, Jaselyn (Stan) Wissink, Julie (Miguel) Ayala, Nikki (Doug) Olberding, Mckensie (Ben) Bess and granddog Bailey Mohr; 15 great grandchildren: Madison, Tyler, Molly, Griffin, Claire, Easton and Alybeth Mohr, Baby Carlson, Chloe Wissink, Joselyn, Vanessa, and Analia Ayala, Gabrielle and Gunner Olberding and Dillon Mohr; brothers-in-law Frank (Arlene) Mohr, Bob (Claudia) Mohr and Al Mohr; sister-in-laws Louise Mishler and Sandy (John) Holtz; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
