JEANETTE "JANET" SEXTRO

Janet Sextro, 88, of Carroll, died early Friday morning, June 8, 2012, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.

Mass of the Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 12, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll. The celebrant will be Father Timothy Johnson. Music will be by Barb McDermott and the Holy Spirit Choir. Lector will be Heidi Miller. Gift bearers will be Gerald and Doris Schreck. Casket bearers will be Clyde Leonard, Jason Miller, Don Olson, Mike Berger, Dan Sturm and Greg Schreck. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Coon Rapids Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at Holy Spirit Church one hour before Mass. Memorials may be left at the church for the American Lung Association or for the St. Anthony Pastoral Care Endowment Fund.

Janet was born on April 22, 1924, at Templeton, Iowa, a daughter of Louis and Clara (Heithoff) Schreck. She attended Sacred Heart School and graduated in 1941. Following graduation she attended St. Anthony School of Nursing and graduated as a registered nurse in 1945. After working two years at St. Anthony's Hospital she married John Maurice Miller on May 20, 1947 and then moved to Coon Rapids where she worked with her husband at Miller-McCarty Chick Co. until the birth of her son Michael in November 1949. Janet was a stay-at-home mother raising their son Mike and daughter Susan, who was born in January 1961. Following the death of her husband in 1976 she joined Village Clinic in Coon Rapids and worked for Dr. Gary Castle until her retirement in 1984. In 1991 she married Herbert J. Sextro in Omaha, Nebraska, where they resided until his death in August 2003. Janet then returned to the Carroll area where she was most recently a resident at Swan House. She was active in her children's lives serving as a Cub Scout den mother, Girl Scout leader and teaching first-grade religion at Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids. In retirement Janet loved to travel, golf, bowl, read, and solving word puzzles and spending daily afternoon visits with her friends at Burger King. She was a member of Holy Spirit Parish, Parish Ladies Guild and St. Anthony Hospital Alumni Association.

Survivors include her daughter, Susan Leonard and her husband Clyde of Des Moines; daughter-in-law, Karen Miller of Coon Rapids; two grandchildren, Heidi Miller of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, and Jason Miller of Coon Rapids; her brother, Gerald (Doris) Schreck of Templeton; her sisters-in-law: Marie Schreck of Carroll, Marie Sextro of Carroll, Dorothy Masching of Carroll, and Ruth Vanderheiden of Carroll; her brothers-in-law: William Horbach of Templeton, Norbert (Dora) Sextro of Surprise, Arizona, Leo Sextro of Manning, and Leonard (Laurie) Sextro of Manning; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands John Maurice Miller and Herbert J. Sextro; her son Michael Miller, in 2009; one brother, Elmer Schreck; and three sisters, Colette Schreck, Leona Horbach and Dorothy Romey.
