Private Family Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, December 18, 2020, at Oakcrest Funeral Services in Algona with Reverend Cynthia Finn officiating. The funeral service will be Livestreamed on the Oakcrest Funeral Services Facebook Page. Graveside services will be held at the Manning City Cemetery in Manning, Iowa.
Jeanette "Jan" Lois Meyer Pohlman was born June 21, 1938, on a farm north of Manilla, Iowa. She was born into the family of Carl and Edna (Hell) Meyer with two brothers, Donald and Marcus, and a sister, Sarah. At age four, the family moved to a farm northwest of Vail, Iowa. Jeanette attended country school until December of her 4th grade year. She then attended Vail Public Schools and graduated in 1956. Jeanette knew she wanted to be a teacher from an early age after helping with classes at her country school. She attended Northwest Missouri State and received a bachelors in education. Her love of teaching was constant during her lifetime and she went on to teach 36 years of her career, most at Sentral-North Kossuth in Fenton, Iowa. Jeanette was married in 1965 to Harold Pohlman and two children, Paula Kay and Matthew, were born into this union. They divorced in 1978 and Jeanette devoted her life to raising her children and being of service in the community.
Jeanette was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Algona, serving on many committees, chairperson for Hope and Friendship Circles and cooking for Aktion Kiwanis. She served as President of the Algona Women's Club and was a member of American Association of University Women, Women's Federation- Kossuth Chapter, and Delta Kappa-Beta Omicron for teachers. Jeanette enjoyed reading, gardening with her flowers and playing cards with her friends every week. She was known for her cinnamon rolls that she shared generously with people and loved teaching her secret recipe to her grandchildren.
Jeanette died on December 11, 2020. She is survived by her daughter, Paula Kay (Algona), and granddaughter, Rosmina Garcia (Denver, Colorado), as well as her son, Matthew and his wife, Dawn (Manson), and their two children, Miranda and Grant Pohlman. Jeanette also held her siblings in law, nieces, nephews and their families close to her heart.
She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, Donald Meyer (brother), Marcus Meyer (brother), Sarah Barten (sister), Joseph Garcia (grandson), Larry Meyer (nephew), Josh Smith (nephew), Carla Barten (niece) and Howard and Hazel Pohlman (former parent-in-laws).
