Death Of James Stewart
November 17, 1904

Mr. James Stewart, a former resident of Jackson Township; but who has recently made his home in Harlan, died last Sunday, November 6, 1904, at the age of 94 years. Death was caused by pneumonia of which he was taken sick on Thursday of last week. The funeral was held from the Congregational church in the city Wednesday afternoon at one o'clock and the remains were taken to Bowman's grove to be interred in the Baptist Cemetery, where he has a son buried.

Mr. Stewart's parents were both natives of Scotland, but deceased; was born in County Cavan, Ireland, in 1810. He was married in Ireland to Anna Gibson who survives him. Fifteen children were born to them, eleven of whom are still living. They are Thomas, Lizzie, John James, Joseph Henry, George E., Maggie, Samuel R., Isaiah G., Andrew, Richard and Sarah. The family emigrated to America in 1877, going to Marengo, Iowa, where they remained about a month and then removed to Shelby County, settling on the farm in Jackson Township which the family still owns.

Mr. Stewart was a devoted Christian. His parents were Scotch Presbyterians, he was baptized and brought up in the Presbyterian Church to which he always adhered. After his removal to Harlan he became a member of the First Congregational church of this city. When he realized that death was drawing near, he was prepared to go before his Maker. Among his last words were: "If it is the Lord's will, I am prepared to go." "I hope the dear Lord will soon take me home to Glory." All the children were at his bedside when he died except Thomas, who did not arrive in time, and Lizzie, who lived in Ireland.

The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Frank G. Beardsley, who took his text from I. Chronicles 19:15. Many people were present to honor the memory of a dutiful father and a loving husband, a good citizen and a true Christian.

The following relatives were present at the funeral: Thomas Stewart of Bloomfield, Nebraska, Mr. and Mrs. John J. Stewart of Manning, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph H. Stewart of Manning, Mr. and Mrs. Eli Harter of Sac City, S.R. Stewart and wife, I.G.
