James Matteson

Brother James T. Matteson was born at Lynnville, Jasper County, February 24, 1847. He departed this life July 4, 1925, at Humeston, Iowa, age 78 years, 4 months, and 10 days.

He was married to Anna Eliza Banghart, October 10, 1869, who preceded him in death August 23, 1889. Two children were born to this union, William H., who died in infancy, and Charles H. of Burlington, Iowa.

Was married a second time to Emily Paine December 30, 1891, who died January 30, 1895.

Brother Matteson was one of the early settlers of this part of Carroll County, having purchased, two years before Manning was laid out, an eighty acres which was included in the corporate limits. He voted at the first city election held March 10, 1982, was a member of the school board in 1888 and 1889, and held several township offices.

He had a generous, happy disposition, ever ready to extend a helping hand where needed. He was friendly with everybody, and loved by his masonic brethren and personal friends. He moved to Guthrie County in 1900 and to Decatur County in 1907. James was as a member of the Decatur Lodge #109 at the time of his death.

Note: there was a personally written letter to the Manning Masonic Lodge by Ethel Matteson, providing the lodge with information about the death of James Matteson and some history about him for an obituary.
One interesting fact is that Ethel refers to James' body being returned to Manning and buried in the Manning Cemetery next to his two wives. Ethel requested that some lodge members meet the train and Sexton when the body arrived and that arrangements were already made with William Bobar to get the body buried in the Manning Cemetery.
The official city records list Emily but James as J.T.
The genealogical booklet records by Ging Hudson show both Anne and Emily listed on the Matteson tombstones in the cemetery but James is only listed as J.T.
