Death with its bitter sting came into our midst and took Jacob Rohde "to a land from whence none return." His demise occurred after an illness of but a few days.
Jacob Henry Rhode was born in Heide, Germany, October, 6, 1840. In early childhood he became an orphan, and lived his youthful life with relatives. In 1864 he served in the Army of Denmark.
While still in the twenties he came to America, and made his home in New Holstein, Wisconsin, and later moved to Moline, Illinois, where in 1871 he was united in holy wedlock to Miss Louise Grabe, who died 18 months later. To this union one child was born, which died in infancy.
In 1873 he was united in marriage to Miss Catherina Peper of Moline, Illinois, with whom he came to Crawford County, Iowa, in the spring of 1876 and lived on a farm until some years later they moved to Manilla. Here they resided until death claimed his wife in February 1891.
The coming fall he made a trip to Germany. In the spring of 1892 he was again united in marriage to Miss Fredericka Schilling in Husum, Germany. To this union one child was born which death claimed and a few days later claimed his loving wife.
Then in 1898, he was once more united in marriage to Miss Bertha Wohlers, and in 1901 he moved to Manning, Carroll County Iowa, where on November 6, 1913, death called him home at the age of 73 years and 21 days.
The funeral services were held at the Lutheran Evangelical Church the following Sunday.
Rev. Johann Ansorge of Manning officiated. Interment was made in the Manilla Cemetery.
He leaves to mourn his loss a wife, Mrs. Bertha Rhode, two step-children, Walter and Bertha Wohlers, five nieces, and one nephew, besides many other relatives and a host of friends.
