Ila then went to Frances Shimer School for Girls in Mt. Carroll, IL for one year before earning her Liberal Arts Degree with majors in English and Drama from Drake University in 1931. While at Drake she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority and served as president. Following her graduation from Drake Ila taught one year at Dunkerton High School.

In addition, she was a charter member of Chapter IS of the PEO Sisterhood. Though Ila was a teacher and active in the community, she considered herself a homemaker throughout her life.

When God calls home the dear ones
whom we love
To dwell with Him in perfect peace above,
"We cannot feel that He has loosed
the tie that binds
Our human hearts on earth, so we
find comfort in the thought they may be
Our guardian angels, keeping watch over us.
We still are theirs, and they are ours,
Even though they dwell in heaven
and we on earth below.
