Howard Alexander, son of Charles Hanford and Elizabeth Gertrude Campbell Ramsey, was born May 8, 1918, near Botna, Iowa. He attended country school near his home and then graduated from Manning High School in 1935.

After attending business school in Omaha, Howard moved to California. He lived in San Pedro and worked for the San Pedro Boat Works for many years. On April 14, 1976 he suffered a debilitating stroke and could not return to work.

Howard had many interests in his life and his family loved being with him. He owned property in Oregon and Florida and spent time there following his stroke, living in Melbourne, Florida for a time. Music was an important part of Howard’s life. He loved to play the piano and sing, especially enjoying classical music. When he was able, Howard enjoyed gardening and used tropical plants, waterfalls and interesting settings for his gardens.

As his health continued to fail, Howard felt the need to return to Iowa to be near his family. In the mid 1980s he moved to Manning, Iowa, where he enjoyed independent living until April 12, 1993, when he became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home. He died there on Sunday, September 26, 1999, at the age of 81 years, 4 months and 18 days.

Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers: William Ramsey and C. Donald Ramsey and a sister Neva Hahn.

Howard is survived by a sister Doris Rutz of Manning; brother Robert Ramsey and his wife Charlotte of Whittier, California; half-brother Merlin Ramsey of South El Monte, California; sister-in-law Florence Ramsey of Manning; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
